2005 Season In Review

The 2005 Season will go down as one of the busiest and arguably most successful seasons in Kilohana history. As a member of our club, it was my pleasure to experience such a year with you and participate in the challenges, victories and growth of every member of our ohana. As the club president for 2005, it is my honor to give you a summary of the season.

January

Krabfeed Fundraiser - Our annual crabfeed fundraiser on January 29th at Holy Spirit was a major success. Not only was the event a sellout, the show was a smashing success.

Da crowds were wowed by our very own Kilohana Idol Show - a mix of hiphop, Hawaiian folk dance, Filipino tinikling, laugh out loud skits, taiko drumming and Hawaiian folk songs. The show came to a stirring end with a group ukelele performance led by Uncle Snookerdoodle aka Shaun Gavigan, a finish which left out audience standing and swaying as one ohana.

February

In February, Kilohana purchased our very first working motor boat, a 17 foot Boston Whaler Montauk.

The Montauk is a beautiful craft that will provide safety for our crews throughout the season, allow them to push the training envelope by enabling longer practices in trickier waters, and prepare them better for 9-man season.

April

In keeping with our mission to perpetuate the Polynesian culture, Kilohana sponsored a Haka seminar in which 50-60 people participated.

Many of the keiki, kane and wahine were from the halau community, and it was great fun learning a bit of the Maori culture from actual Maori from New Zealand.

Many thanks to Semus Fitzgerald who came all the way from the Polynesian Cultural Center in Hawaii to teach us a bit of his heritage.

Also in April, our Sponsorship Chair, Jenn Liu, helped put together a successful team building event for the folks from Visa International. Kilohana provided them with food, small kine lecture on the Hawaiian sport of outrigger paddling, and actual hands on racing. Four crews participated in racing with Kilohana providing the Hoe U’li for some sprint racing. All had a great time while the event provided Kilohana some kala for our programs.
