2005 Season In Review (cont'd)
May
Our racing season started in May with the pre-season long distance races in Berkeley and Monterey. You had to be there to believe how well our crews performed.
All I can say about this is that it was a proud moment in our history when our club fielded the most number of crews while earning the most points in both events.
Monterey has got to be one of my highlights of the year. Our paddlers sucked it up, suited up and prepared to race for 2 days straight. It was a great weekend for Kilohana as we came out ahead in the head to head battles. It was one of the best performances from our gender and coed crews, who showed that they do in fact have both the endurance and mental toughness to go head to head with the best of the NCOCA.
June
June saw the arrival of our longed for Mirage OC-6. Uncle Manley Bush kindly offered to bless Ka Makana Ia Makou I Mua Gift for our Future. It was a memorable moment in our history and glad yall came out to help and share in a bit of tradition.
July
June and July is sprint season and Kilohana took 2nd place overall in big club category for the second year in a row. Equally impressive was our 3rd straight 1st place award for V-1 racing.
It shows the strength and number of paddlers that we have. My hats off to all of Kilohana, as I saw many of our paddlers taking the opportunity to compete in V-1 racing.
August and September
After sprint season it was onto the LD season. Our crews suited up for Alcatraz and performed well. Our junior coed crew, our novice crews and several open crews placed despite the unfamiliar waters.
Catalina was again on our calendar and we sent 2 crews and then some. Our Wahine placed in the top 10 for Spec Division, and our Kane battled in some of the best head to head battles. Some of our paddlers were also able to paddle with other crews. Beethoven Cheng was able to secure a seat with SFOCC, and had to be one of the guys most proud to be in not one but two huli. Mary Lou Lumiqued and Amy Mah found seats with SFOCC wahine and they had big smiles all da way round in their race. After hearing from them, it reminded me so much as to why we love to paddletrue spirit and positive mana.
