The mana in this canoe comes from all the people who have sailed aboard Hokule'a and cared for her
- Bruce Blankenfeld, defining the source of a canoe's mana, or spirit
Our canoes are family. If this is not clear to you as you take a seat in one of our OC-6s, it will become evident the moment you see the reverence our senior paddlers show their vessel each time they take one out into the bay.
Each Hawaiian canoe has a name, a birth record, a provenance, a history, and most importantly, a mana.
That mana carries with it the strength and effort of many of our finest paddlers. As a member of Kilohana, you add to that mana each time you practice and race for the club. On this page we list down the names of our canoes and, over time, will hopefully write down some of the seas and battles these canoes have carried us through.
- O'Kamaka Hiapo (First Born) - our first Malia
- Ikaika (Strength) - our second Malia
- Lehua (Ohia Lehua)
- Kilohana (Of the Best)
- Po'okela (Superior) - our second Bradley
- Maka Koa (Eye of the Warrior) - our third Bradley
- Ka Makana Ia Makou I Mua (Gift for Our Future) - our first Mirage delivered to us in summer, 2005
Here is a list of things to remember when handling a V6 canoe.
