Kilohana?
Kilohana Outrigger Canoe Club is a Hawaiian Outrigger Canoe Club in the San Francisco Bay Area. Our club's mission is to spread the Hawaiian culture through the ancient sport of Hawaiian Outrigger Canoeing.
Our canoe club is composed of paddlers from all walks of life, from the littlest keiki to the biggest kahuna on the block. Some have been paddlng since they could barely reach over the gunwales on an OC-6. Others are fresh in the boat (FIBs...aka novices).
Our paddlers make the club what it is, a blend of competitiveness, good sportsmanship and most importantly, ohana.
Our club believes that achieving the club mission means being the best in everything that we do while holding ourselves to the highest of conduct and sportsmanship.
Being the best means, to the degree that our ohana can extend itself, participating in any and every outrigger race in Northern California. Being the best also means exploring new boundaries - participating in races outside Northern California like the Catalina Crossing, Molokai, Kona and Duke's. Being the best also means having not just a select few race but also having crews in different divisions including keiki, senior masters, and so on. Lastly, being the best means developing our crews not just for the year. At Kilohana, we see the need for multiyear training starting at the keiki and novice level. Our paddlers are constantly reminded that to train for a big race, one needs to start two years ahead.
While training people to become better outrigger paddlers is a primary focus of our club, we also teach our paddlers the origins and traditions of our sport - how to take care of our canoes, the provenances of our various canoes, and so on.
So the question again is...Kilohana?
